SERVICE ABOVE SELF AWARD

Trumansburg Rotary's Service Above Self awards program recognizes youth who exemplify Rotary's motto, “Service Above Self” and who live “Rotary's 4-Way Test” in their every day lives -
Of the things we think, say, or do -
Is it the Truth?
Is it Fair to All Concerned?
Will it Build Goodwill and Better Friendships?
Will it be Beneficial to All Concerned?

Service Above Self Award Recipient
Trumansburg Rotary is pleased to announce the winner of February’s Service Above Self award is Brayden Hutt a sophomore at TCSD.  He was nominated by Paul Wiech who had this to say…

Brayden has shown tremendous growth during his time in high school. This year he created an independent study for himself that has him being the Maple Syrup Production Manager. This requires him to manage all aspects of the process from identification to tapping, collecting and the final boil. He is also responsible for data collection and helping to create “How-To” videos that his group is sharing with New York State schools to assist them in participating in this project. He is also a key member of the group creating “THE NYS Maple Syrup Network.” What makes him exceptional is that he does not do it by himself. He works with elementary and middle school teachers and students to guide them through the process. This means he must have the knowledge as well as the ability to share this knowledge and guide others. This coming from a young adult who others would describe as quiet. Brayden has gone above and beyond his project as he has attended conferences to better his knowledge as well as presenting at a state-wide conference of educators in March. During the “Mid-Winter Maple Classic” in Syracuse Brayden was the first person to interview maple syrup producers for an oral history project his colleagues are doing. His work is not only published to Spotify but will be archived at The History Center of Tompkins County to help them fill a lack of information about maple syrup production. Brayden is selfless in giving his time.

Congratulations!

Service Above Self Award Recipient

Samara Sacks is a sophomore studying in the Trumansburg school district and has been selected to receive Trumansburg Rotary’s January Service Above Self Award.

Samara was nominated by Ulysses Philomathic Library volunteer coordinator, Heather Tielens, who had this to say, “Samara just moved to the area last summer and almost immediately came to the library to sign up to be a volunteer. She is a voracious reader who adores books and found herself at the library most days after school. We have lots of volunteers at the library but what makes her exceptional is her ability to connect with everyone so easily and her willingness to pick up extra shifts and help out where needed. She volunteers at the circulation desk twice per week (more than any other volunteer)! We all enjoy her energy, curiosity and her wilingness to give her time to her new community.”

Rotary’s Service Above Self Award was instituted to recognize students in the Trumansburg Central School District, including those who are home schooled, who exemplify Rotary’s motto, Service Above Self, and who live Rotary’s 4-Way Test in their everyday lives: Of the things we think and do, is it the Truth; Is it Fair to All Concerned; Will it Build Goodwill and Better Friendships; and Will it be Beneficial to All Concerned?
Each monthly winner receives a $50 gift certificate to the Trumansburg business of their choice. At the end of the school year, a student is selected from the group to receive a $1,000 award. Anyone in the community who knows a prospective nominee is encouraged to send in a nomination. Program guidelines and a nomination form are available under “Service Above Self Award” on the Trumansburg Rotary web site, tburgrotary.org

Samara has chosen to receive a $50 gift certificate from Green Horse Books.  How appropriate for this bibliophile!
