Trumansburg Rotary is pleased to announce the winner of February’s Service Above Self award is Brayden Hutt a sophomore at TCSD. He was nominated by Paul Wiech who had this to say…
Brayden has shown tremendous growth during his time in high school. This year he created an independent study for himself that has him being the Maple Syrup Production Manager. This requires him to manage all aspects of the process from identification to tapping, collecting and the final boil. He is also responsible for data collection and helping to create “How-To” videos that his group is sharing with New York State schools to assist them in participating in this project. He is also a key member of the group creating “THE NYS Maple Syrup Network.” What makes him exceptional is that he does not do it by himself. He works with elementary and middle school teachers and students to guide them through the process. This means he must have the knowledge as well as the ability to share this knowledge and guide others. This coming from a young adult who others would describe as quiet. Brayden has gone above and beyond his project as he has attended conferences to better his knowledge as well as presenting at a state-wide conference of educators in March. During the “Mid-Winter Maple Classic” in Syracuse Brayden was the first person to interview maple syrup producers for an oral history project his colleagues are doing. His work is not only published to Spotify but will be archived at The History Center of Tompkins County to help them fill a lack of information about maple syrup production. Brayden is selfless in giving his time.
